Arriving in Budapest...by
air. To get back into Budapest you have your choices of taking
the taxi, the airport minibus, or bus #93.
Obviouly taking the taxi is most convenient, but most expensive
as well. Also, calling for a taxi from the airport is a lot
safer than just walk out side and order a taxi from the curb.
Not all taxis are exactly legitimate. Back in the late 90s
the government regulate the max per km rate, but not all cabs
adheres to it. Stay away from nice "Mercesdes" or
"BMW" taxis. A cheaper alternative, and almost a
convenient, is to take the Airport MiniBus,
it's almost like van-pooling. They have a booth just out side
the Custom check area, just walk to their desk, tell them
where you want to go, and wait until they call you. It costs
around $10 for a one way trip. The cheapest way to get back
to the city is via public transport. Take bus #93
from the airport to Kobanya-Kispest, and from here take the
M3(blue) metro line back to the city center. Make sure you
have the public transport tickets (jegy), and validate them
at the red or orange boxes on the buses or metro entrances.

Scams to watch
out for...
If you're new to
Hungary, learn the currency (Hungarian
currency is Forint) and what they look like.
Shaddy/dishonest merchants...and taxi drivers
have been known to give change back in other
currency (with much less in value).
Guys read this!!!...You're
walking down the street, usually in the downtown
area, and a couple beautiful Hungarian girls
come up to you and start a conversation...being
really friendly and all, and they they take
you to a nearby bar for a drink. You might think
to yourself "Wow, the women here are so
friendly and hot...and you're such
a lucky guy..." Well...snap out of that
dream and decline the offer from these beauties.
Stay away from them...they're nothing but trouble!
If you were naive enough to follow and buy them
a drink or two...you will be in for a shock
when you get the bill that will equal to a couple
months of your rent. So exercise some caution
here. Besides, how good looking are you anyway?
and when was the last time a hot babe came up
and offered you a drink? Yeah, I thought so!!!
When you go to a
new restaurant, ALWAYS check for the price
of drinks or food before ordering.
Do not exchange your
money with anyone on the street. Go to
a bank or better yet use the ATM (cash) machine
to get your money.
Keep you bag
in sight at all time...be extra careful to your
bags, pockets when traveling on metro lines
#1 and #3; tram lines #2 and #4; bus line #7.
If you take a taxi...avoid
unmarked taxis, or taxis that are really fancy
i.e...new Mercedes or BMWs...as they've been
know to over-charged their riders. Take taxis
that have repeating phone digits...like 233
3333, 211 1111, or 222 2222, etc... by the way,
if you order a taxi by calling for it by phone,
the cost per km will be cheaper than if you
were to wave it down from the street. |
